Reed Johnson wasn't fully able to celebrate his 1,000th career hit, because on the play, Justin Bour was thrown out at the plate. The throw by Marlon Byrd denied Miami the tying run in the seventh inning. The Marlins were unable to recover in a 2-1 loss to the Phillies on Saturday night despite a solid start by Brad Hand.

Kyle Kendrick began the last month of his season, and potentially his last month with the Phillies, with seven scoreless innings against the Braves. After a difficult several months, the outing gave some hope that the righty would make the most of his last month. Then came his last start against the Pirates. Kendrick will have another go at things Saturday when he takes the hill in the middle game against the Marlins, hoping to dispel any remaining playoff dreams for Miami.

Double-A Jacksonville finished the regular season on a 10-game winning streak, clinching a playoff spot on the last day of the season. The hot streak continued in the playoffs, culminating Friday with a 6-1 victory against visiting Chattanooga to complete a sweep of the best-of-five Southern League Championship Series.
