Left-hander Jairo Labourt, the Blue Jays' No. 16 prospect, struck out a career-high nine batters in six scoreless innings on Tuesday as Class A Short Season Vancouver defeated Boise, 2-0.
Labourt scattered seven hits and one walk. He has now allowed just one run in his last 21 2/3 innings, a stretch of four starts. Labourt has struck out 29 batters and walked eight during the streak.
The Canadians offense was led by shortstop Franklin Barreto, the Blue Jays' No. 8 prospect. The 18-year old went 2-for-4 with a run, an RBI and a stolen base. Barreto is hitting .321/.395/.508 with five home runs and 21 stolen bases in 62 games this season.
Labourt began the season with Class A Lansing, but struggled with his command and spent just a month with the Lugnuts. He moved to Vancouver when the Northwest League's season began in June and has pitched much better for the Canadians.
With the victory Tuesday, Labourt improved to 4-3 with a 1.94 ERA for Vancouver. He has struck out 72 batters and walked 32 in 60 1/3 innings. Labourt leads the Northwest League in ERA and ranks second in strikeouts.
