Blue Jays complete deal with Marlins
The TORONTO BLUE JAYS have completed a 12-player trade with the Miami Marlins that will see the club acquire RHP JOSH JOHNSON, LHP MARK BUEHRLE, SS JOSE REYES, C JOHN BUCK, INF/OF EMILIO BONIFACIO and cash considerations. In return the Marlins will acquire SS YUNEL ESCOBAR, SS ADEINY HECHAVARRIA, RHP HENDERSON ALVAREZ, C JEFF MATHIS along with the following minor league players, LHP JUSTIN NICOLINO, RHP ANTHONY DESCLAFANI and OF JAKE MARISNICK.
JOHNSON, 28, was 8-14 last season with a 3.81 ERA in 31 starts. The two-time All-Star recorded 165 strikeouts with 65 walks in 191 1/3 innings. The 6-7, 249 lb. right-hander led the National League with a 2.30 ERA in 2010. In eight seasons with the Marlins the former 4th round selection in the 2002 First Year Player draft owns a career record of 56-37 in 154 games with 144 starts and an ERA of 3.15.
BUEHRLE, 33, finished the 2012 season with a 13-13 record and a 3.74 ERA in his first season with the Marlins. In 31 starts the 6-2, 230 lb. native of St. Charles, Missouri pitched 202 1/3 innings, marking the 12th consecutive season he pitched at least 200 innings. The four-time All-Star spent the first 12 years of his career with the Chicago White Sox before joining Miami last season, and owns a career record of 174-132 in 421 games, including 396 starts with a 3.82 ERA.
REYES, 29, hit .287 for the Marlins last season with 37 doubles, 12 triples, 11 home runs and 57 RBI, while adding 40 stolen bases. The four-time All-Star posted a .347 on-base percentage, after walking 63 times with just 56 strikeouts. The 2011 National League batting champion is a career .291 hitter, with 259 doubles, 111 triples, 92 home runs and 480 RBI in 1,210 games. The 6-1, 200 lb. switch-hitter is fourth among active Major League players with 410 career stolen bases.
BUCK, 33, appeared in 106 games last season for the Marlins batting .192 with 12 home runs and 41 RBI. The 6-3, 210 lb. catcher returns to Toronto where he was an American League All-Star in 2010 and hit .281 with 25 doubles, 20 home runs and 66 RBI. In nine major league seasons with Kansas City (2004-2009), Toronto (2010) and the Marlins the Kemmerer, Wyoming native has posted a .235 batting average with 159 doubles, 118 home runs and 423 RBI.
BONIFACIO, 27, batted .258 last season in 64 games, with 30 stolen bases and 30 runs scored. The 5-11, 200lb. switch hitter has played all three outfield positions as well as second base, third base and shortstop during his six year career with Arizona (2007-2008), Washington (2008) and the Marlins (2009-2012). In 476 career games the Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic native has posted a .267 average with a .329 on-base percentage along with 53 doubles, 25 triples, seven home runs and 110 stolen bases.
To make room on the 40-man roster the Blue Jays have designated RHP JOEL CARRENO for assignment.
