"He's not going to come back with us this year," Toronto manager Cito Gaston said on Tuesday at Tropicana Field.
The 26-year-old Accardo was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right forearm on May 10 and has been recalled from his Minor League rehab assignment. Gaston noted that Accardo is scheduled to have his forearm examined by renowned arm specialist Dr. James Andrews in Birmingham, Ala.
In 16 games for the Blue Jays this season, Accardo went 0-3 with a 6.57 ERA, five strikeouts and four walks over 12 1/3 innings. Accardo made 13 rehab appearances between stints with the Gulf Coast League Blue Jays, Class A Dunedin and Triple-A Syracuse, posting a 3.55 ERA with seven strikeouts and four walks in 12 2/3 innings.
Last season, Accardo -- acquired in a trade with San Francisco in July 2006 -- filled in for injured closer B.J. Ryan and saved 30 games for Toronto. As Toronto's temporarily stopper a year ago, Accardo posted a 2.14 ERA with 57 strikeouts and 24 walks over 67 1/3 innings, during which he limited hitters to a .206 average.
