Jays place Wolfe on 15-day DL

Reliever hampered by right triceps strain

TORONTO -- Blue Jays reliever Brian Wolfe was placed on the 15-day disabled list on Thursday with a right triceps strain and won't be eligible to rejoin the bullpen until early May.

"We had no choice, really," manager John Gibbons. "Hopefully, he comes back quick. It's been on and off, nagging him. But it's in the triceps area, so that's just muscle -- that's no big deal."

Replacing the 27-year-old Wolfe on Toronto's roster was left-hander David Purcey, who is scheduled to make a spot start against the Tigers on Friday. Purcey is only expected to be in the fold for that outing, so the Jays will likely add a reliever this weekend to fill in for Wolfe.

In eight games this season, Wolfe is 0-1 with a 3.68 ERA and five strikeouts in 7 1/3 innings, including a one-inning appearance in Wednesday's 14-inning loss to the Rangers. Last year the right-hander went 3-1 with a 2.98 ERA in 38 appearances out of Toronto's bullpen.

Wolfe will be eligible to be activated for the Jays' May 2-5 series at home against the White Sox. Considering that Toronto is short a right-handed arm in the bullpen, Brandon League would appear to be a top candidate to receive the call from Triple-A Syracuse.
