Jake Westbrook of the Cleveland Indians has been named the American League Player of the Week for the period of April 19-25.

In addition to being one of only two AL pitchers with a complete game victory last week, Westbrook (1-0, 1.13 ERA, Major League-best 16.0 IP, 2 H, 3 BB, 10 SO) also threw seven perfect innings of relief last Monday during a 10-4 loss to Detroit. Following a rain delay, the 26-year-old right-hander entered the game with the Indians in a 4-0 hole in the top of the first and went on to retire all 21 batters he faced. In a start on Sunday, Westbrook limited the Tigers to two hits and two runs over nine innings in a 3-2 Cleveland win. He set down 27 batters in a row over a span of three appearances. Westbrook was the first Indians pitcher to win weekly honors since Bartolo Colsn did it in September 2000.

Other pitchers nominated for the weekly award included Boston's Pedro Martinez (2-0, 0.64 ERA) and Minnesota's Joe Nathan (0.00 ERA, 4 saves). Other candidates included Brandon Inge (.435, 2 HR, 10 RBI) and Rondell White (.387, 3 HR, ML-best 11 RBI) of the Tigers; Baltimore's Rafael Palmeiro (.450, 8 RBI); Kansas City's Ken Harvey (AL-best .522, 4 RBI) and Matt Stairs (.412, 8 RBI, AL-high .565 OBP); Lew Ford (.409, 7 RBI) of the Twins; Texas outfielders David Dellucci (.348, 3 HR), Kevin Mench (.389, 2 HR, 6 RBI, AL-high .889 SLG), and Laynce Nix (.417, 3 HR, 10 RBI; 2 HR, career-high 5 RBI in Sunday's 14-6 win over Seattle); and Toronto's Carlos Delgado (.478, 1 HR, 6 RBI).

White hit a walk-off three-run homer in a 5-2 win over the Indians on Saturday, while Inge collected a triple and a grand slam during an 11-run sixth inning on Friday in a 17-3 win, highlighting Detroit's biggest single-inning production ever at Comerica Park. The trio of Rangers led Texas to a 5-1 record, including the club's first series victory over an AL West opponent on the road (at Anaheim) since September 2000.

Tourneau, the world's largest watch store, is proud to award American League Player of the Week Jake Westbrook with a Tourneau luxury Swiss timepiece from its Safari collection.
