Twins lose challenge on Bautista's strong throw
Suzuki ruled out at second base after trying to stretch single into double
TORONTO -- Twins manager Ron Gardenhire unsuccessfully challenged a play at second base in the sixth inning of Wednesday's game against the Blue Jays.
With Marcus Stroman pitching for the Blue Jays and Oswaldo Arcia at first base with one out, Kurt Suzuki lifted a fly ball over right fielder Jose Bautista's head. Bautista made a strong throw to second base, and Suzuki was ruled out by second-base umpire Tom Hallion.
Gardenhire came out to challenge the play, and after a review, it was ruled that the call stood and Suzuki was out at second base. Eduardo Nunez grounded back to Stroman to end the inning and strand Arcia at third base. Trevor Plouffe's sacrifice fly before the play had given the Twins a 3-0 lead.
It was the 15th time Gardenhire has challenged a play this year, and he's been successful six times.
