ST. PETERSBURG -- Catcher Jose Molina has been named the Rays' recipient of the inaugural Wilson Defensive Player of the Year Award.
The Wilson Defensive Player of the Year Award named the best defensive player on each Major League club, while also crowning the best defensive player in each league and naming the best defensive team in all of baseball.
The award winners were determined by the detailed statistical analysis of MLB Network's "shredder system," used by Clubhouse Confidential, plus input from MLB Network analysts.
Molina had a .994 fielding percentage in 2012 after making just four errors in 702 chances.
The GIBBY trophy for Defensive Player of the Year will be awarded as part of the 2012 Greatness in Baseball Yearly Awards, which are based on voting by media, front-office personnel, MLB alumni and the Society for American Baseball Research, as well as fan balloting on MLB.com.
From Monday, Nov. 12, through Sunday, Dec. 2, fans will be able to cast their ballots at MLB.com for the year's top defensive star, with no individual league affiliation.
