Three Blue Jays homes games in September will be simulcast with described video, making them accessible for the blind and those with impaired vision.
Accessible Media Inc., a non-profit multimedia organization that serves five million in Canada, has partnered with the Blue Jays to produce the Sportsnet simulcasts. Game dates are Sept. 1 against the Rays, Sept. 15 against the Red Sox and Sept. 29 against the Yankees. All are scheduled 1 p.m. contests.
"We are very pleased to join with Accessible Media Inc. and Sportsnet to provide this service to the vision impaired," Blue Jays president and CEO Paul Beeston said in a statement. "To our knowledge, we are the first sports organization to have our games provided through this revolutionary approach to accommodating the needs of the blind and low-vision community."
Sam Cosentino, who co-hosts Baseball Central on Sportsnet 590 The Fan, will be doing the voice work.
"This is a giant step for AMI and we are thrilled to bring the excitement of Blue Jays Baseball to our TV audience," AMI vice president of programming and production John Melville said in a press release. "The relaxed pace of baseball is an ideal platform for described video, and fans who are blind or partially sighted will appreciate that extra level of involvement, which will include description of on-screen graphics, displaying score and pitch counts."
