Jays claim Hoffpauir off waivers

Former sixth-round pick joins Toronto from St. Louis

11/03/09 6:23 PM EST

TORONTO -- The Blue Jays added some infield depth on Tuesday, claiming second baseman Jarrett Hoffpauir off waivers from the St. Louis Cardinals. Toronto designated left-hander Bill Murphy for assignment to vacate a spot on the 40-man roster.

The 26-year-old Hoffpauir -- a sixth-round pick by the Cardinals in the 2004 First-Year Player Draft -- split last season between St. Louis and Triple-A Memphis. In eight games with the Cardinals, Hoffpauir hit .250 with a pair of doubles and two RBIs. With Memphis, he hit .291 with 14 homers, 22 doubles and 53 RBIs over 108 contests.

Murphy, 28, appeared in eight games with the Blue Jays last season, posting a 3.18 ERA across 11 1/3 innings out of the bullpen. Murphy finished with a 7.59 ERA in 45 games with Triple-A Las Vegas in '09. Toronto has 10 days to either release, trade or re-assign the left-hander.
