Sweeney exits after being hit on foot
Designated hitter suffers bruised big toe on left foot
TORONTO -- Mariners designed hitter Mike Sweeney had to come out of Thursday night's game after being hit in the foot by a pitch from Blue Jays left-hander Ricky Romero in the second inning.
Sweeney went to first base and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly, giving the Mariners a 1-0 lead, but he was replaced by Ken Griffey Jr. in the third inning.
A club official reported later in the game that Sweeney suffered a bruised big toe on his left foot.
Sweeney entered the series opener as one of Seattle's hottest hitters.
Since Aug. 13, when he was batting .228, the veteran has hit .400 (28-for-70) with six doubles, three home runs and 11 RBIs in 20 games.
