Wells fighting stomach ailment
Center fielder unlikely to return to action until Tuesday
TORONTO -- Blue Jays manager Cito Gaston penciled Vernon Wells back in the starting lineup on Sunday after the center fielder missed the previous two games with a stomach virus. That quickly changed when Gaston saw Wells in the morning.
"He was not looking too good," Gaston said. "I wanted him to play today, but he was still under the weather. So we had to take him out of the lineup. He might be available to run, I don't know. We'll try not to use him."
For the finale of a three-game set against the Red Sox on Sunday, Gaston sent right fielder Alex Rios to center in place of Wells, who had not missed even back-to-back games this season before this latest stretch. With a scheduled off-day on Monday, Wells is hoping to avoid missing more than the three games against Boston.
"That's the plan," said Wells, when asked if he should be able to play on Tuesday, when Toronto opens a three-game series against Cleveland.
Wells, who has stayed in the clubhouse while the team has run through workouts on the field prior to each of the past three games, said he first became ill on Thursday. Wells first experienced a bad headache before becoming sick during his drive home from the ballpark on that evening.
"That was a first," Wells said. "Luckily, I had a bag in the car."
In 90 games for the Blue Jays this season, Wells has hit .263 with nine home runs and 38 RBIs. Wells opened the season as Toronto's cleanup hitter, but his struggles at the plate led Gaston to move Wells lower in the lineup earlier this month. Wells has hit .372 with two homers and two RBIs in his past 10 games for the Jays.
Gaston also noted that veteran outfielder David Dellucci was still sore after taking a pitch off his left foot on Friday night. On Sunday, Dellucci was available off the bench, if needed. X-rays performed on his foot came back negative on Saturday.
