TORONTO -- The Blue Jays claimed a pair of players off waivers on Monday, picking up shortstop Angel Sanchez from the Kansas City Royals and right-hander Kelvin Jimenez from the St. Louis Cardinals.

Sanchez, who is from Puerto Rico, hasn't appeared in a big league game since 2006, and he missed all of '07 after undergoing Tommy John elbow ligament replacement surgery on his right arm. Last season, the 26-year-old Sanchez hit .247 with two home runs and 36 RBIs in 101 games between Double-A Northwest Arkansas and Triple-A Omaha.

Jimenez -- a native of the Dominican Republic -- spent the majority of the 2008 season with Triple-A Memphis in the Pacific Coast League, where he went 1-6 with a 2.92 ERA in 46 relief outings. The 28-year-old righty made 15 appearances for St. Louis, posting a 5.63 ERA out of the bullpen.

With the additions of Sanchez and Jimenez, the Blue Jays' roster has reached 40 players.
