Arencibia heating up under desert sky
Jays catching prospect sizzling at plate in Arizona Fall League
TORONTO -- J.P. Arencibia is beginning to heat up under the Arizona sun. After a slow start for the Blue Jays' top catching prospect, Arencibia enjoyed a strong showing this week with the Phoenix Desert Dogs.
Arencibia is currently riding a six-game hitting streak for Phoenix in the Arizona Fall League, posting a .320 (8-for-25) average with one home run, two doubles and eight RBIs over that stretch. That's the type of performance Toronto has grown accustomed to seeing from the talented catcher.
Most of Arencibia's damage has come within his past two games for the Desert Dogs. On Tuesday, the right-handed-hitting catcher went 2-for-5 at the plate with a home run and three RBIs, helping Phoenix to a 10-6 win over Scottsdale. On Thursday, Arencibia went 2-for-5 again, this time with a double and four RBIs in a 13-1 rout of Peo Javelinas.
Overall, Arencibia has hit .275 (11-for-40) with two home runs and 10 RBIs through 12 games with Phoenix. That's a much-improved performance for the 22-year-old catcher, who owned just a .211 average through his first seven games in the AFL. Given his track record, it seemed only a matter of time before Arencibia's bat warmed up.
Arencibia -- selected 21st overall by the Blue Jays in the first round of the 2007 First-Year Player Draft -- was one of the top offensive performers within Toronto's farm system this past season. Between stints with Class A Dunedin and Double-A New Hampshire, Arencibia hit .298 with 27 homers and 105 RBIs in 126 games.
