Jays at the plate: Gregg Zaun was 1-for-14 coming into Thursday's game, but he broke out in a big way. Zaun scored the Jays' first run when Lyle Overbay knocked him in with a single in the first, drove home two more with a double in the third and cranked out his first homer of the spring -- a solo shot off Aaron Laffey -- in the fifth.

Indians at the plate: Big hits abounded for the Tribe on this day. Travis Hafner, who went homerless all of last spring en route to a disappointing 2007, continued his spring surge with a two-run shot off Sean Marcum in the third. Utility infielder Jamey Carroll had a nice day, driving in a run with a single in the third and two more with a triple in the fifth.

Jays on the mound: Marcum was supposed to go four innings, but he didn't quite make it that far. He gave up five runs (three earned) on 10 hits in 3 2/3 innings. Left-hander John Parrish, in the running to be the Jays' long man, relieved Marcum and gave up two runs on three hits with two walks in 2 1/3 innings.

Indians on the mound: Fausto Carmona didn't exactly have a seamless outing. He was roughed up for three runs on five hits with a strikeout in four innings, bringing his spring ERA to 5.19. Laffey, competing for the fifth rotation spot, surrendered a run on three hits in 2 1/3 innings.

Grapefruit League records: Indians 7-7-1; Blue Jays 5-10.

Up next for the Blue Jays: Closer B.J. Ryan takes the next big step in his recovery from Tommy John ligament replacement surgery when he makes his Grapefruit League debut against the Rays on Friday in St. Petersburg at 1:05 p.m. ET. Right-hander Jesse Litsch, a candidate for the fifth starting spot, makes the start opposite right-hander Edwin Jackson.

Up next for the Indians: Breaking up is hard to do. While some Indians players will have the luxury of sleeping in for a night split-squad game against the Nationals on Friday, others will make an early morning bus trip to Viera, Fla., for a day game against the rest of the Nats. Left-hander Jeremy Sowers will make the 1:05 p.m. ET start opposite left-hander Matt Chico, while the starting nod at the 7:05 p.m. game at Chain of Lakes Park will go to right-hander Jake Westbrook. Washington will counter with right-hander Jason Bergmann in the nightcap.
