Evans to represent Boston in Draft
Red Sox Hall of Famer to announce selections starting June 7
BOSTON -- Long before he became a Fenway favorite -- not to mention a Red Sox Hall of Famer -- Dwight Evans was simply a prospect. The Red Sox drafted the cannon-throwing outfielder with their fifth-round selection back in 1969.
Some 38 years later, life will come full circle in a way for Evans. The man known throughout New England as Dewey will represent the Red Sox in Lake Buena Vista, Fla., on June 7 for Day 1 of the 2007 First-Year Player Draft.
With the draft being televised for the first time, each team will send representatives to Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex to announce draft selections for the television audience.
It is an impressive list around the league that includes Hall of Famers Robin Roberts, Tommy Lasorda, Dave Winfield and Jim Palmer.
Alongside Evans, the Red Sox will also have area scout Ray Fagnant on hand.
Evans played for the Red Sox from 1972-90 -- winning a franchise-record of eight Gold Glove Awards -- before retiring as an Oriole in 1991. The right-handed slugger was a key member on Boston's American League pennant-winning teams of 1975 and '86.
ESPN 2 will carry the draft life on Thursday from 2-6 p.m. ET.
